Sanctuary Movement

U.S. Catholic Bishops Statement regarding the Sanctuary Movement

Sanctuary

We urge every faith community, including every Catholic parish, to declare themselves a sanctuary for people facing deportation and those being targeted based on religion, race or political beliefs. Being a sanctuary can include hosting families at risk of deportation, accompanying people from detention, holding Defend Your Rights trainings and organizing rapid response teams.

As Pope Francis has said to us:” Who is this inn keeper? It is the church, the Christian community, people of compassion and solidarity, social organizations. It is us; it is you, to whom the Lord Jesus daily entrusts those who are afflicted in the body and spirit, so that we can continue pouring out all of his immeasurable mercy and salvation upon them.”

Sanctuary Facts

  • No one with a criminal record and/or trying to evade the law on criminal charges will be housed in sanctuary
  • Lawyers, with expertise in Immigration Law, will be assisting in sanctuary housing
  • You are not breaking the law by providing a safe place for those facing deportation
  • Holy Name is a Second Level Sanctuary; and we will collect and supply the items listed below. Please put your (NEW, NEVER USED, PLEASE) donated items in the bin labeled Sanctuary located in the Sacristy.
  1. Toiletries
  2. Towels
  3. Twin size sheets
  4. Twin size blankets
  5. Coloring books and crayons
  6. Children’s books (gently used will be accepted)

Religious Education

Please consider sharing your faith with the youth of our Parish. Assistance at all levels is needed. We need catechists, classroom aides and substitutes. Join us this fall–we all have something to offer!

Registration forms for all grades (K-11) are available at all entrances of the church and at the Rectory. Please note: Students attending Parochial School (St. Michael’s, Pope Francis, etc.) must register with the Religious Education Office and take the corresponding course to be eligible to receive a sacrament (First Communion or Confirmation).

Classes beginning in September.

Donate School Supplies

We are pleased to participate once again in the Father Beiting’s Appalachian Mission to get school backpacks ready for the upcoming school year. Now is a perfect time to take advantage of the many great school supplies sales going on.

To participate: Please match the first letter of your last name to the wish list. We will be collecting the items for the next two weekends – August 19 & 20 and 26 & 27, and will be packing them on Tuesday, August 29th. Collection boxes will be at the church entrances. Thank you!
