LENTEN REGULATIONS

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence from meat and also days of fast, that is, only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to ones needs, but together they should not equal another full meal.

The other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat.

The obligation to abstain from meat commences at fourteen (14) years of age.

The obligation to fast commences at eighteen (18) years of age and ends at fifty-nine (59) years of age.

Although the faithful enjoy freedom in conscience to excuse themselves for a just cause from these mitigated laws of fast and abstinence, the obligation to do penance is a serious one and no Catholic should lightly excuse himself/herself from this obligation in the Lenten season.

 And the Word is....

LENT

By Fr. John Connors

There have been a couple of times in my life when I have traveled to a desert. Once was when I was over in the Holy Land. But the first time I was in the desert was when I traveled to Las Vegas because the company I worked for then Liptonhad an ice cream plant nearby in Henderson. Las Vegas sits in the middle of a vast desert.

One day I had an extra couple of hours between meetings so I took a drive out into the desert. This was the first time I had ever been in a desert and it was everything I thought it would be. It was desolate and lonely...it was quiet and barren. It was as if I was driving on a highway on the moon. It was flat and dry. There were no trees and no vegetation. The silence is almost total.

The only life present in the desert...is the inner life. You get the feeling that it is just you and God our there. One can experience God in the desert. The three great world religions-----Judaism, Christianity, and Islam---were all born in the desert. It was through the desert that Moses led the Israelites from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land. It was in the desert that John the Baptist heralded the coming of the Messiah.

Biblical stories would lead us to believe then...that to get to something better....we have to pass through the desert. The desert becomes a rite of passage that we must pass through to reach a deeper meaning of our lives. It is no wonder then.... that Jesus chose the desert to spend some 40 days in reflection to prepare for his ministry. Even Jesus shows us that he goes through the desert....to reach a new level in his ministry. Maybe his forty days should teach us something about our forty days the Lent.

We hear in our Gospel today that, that, while in the desert, Jesus is tempted. We are reminded that even Jesus is tempted. Even on who has a purposeful life is tempted. Life does not move on a level plateau. It is full of hills and valleys. Life is full of challenges, adversity.,,,,.and, yes, even temptations.

The popular meaning of temptation is enticing a person to wrong. When we think of temptations, we immediately think of bad things. However, it is not only evil which can lead us astray. Good can do so just as effectively. Temptation comes under the guise of good. It is only when our life is hard and littered with obstacles that we stumble....we can also be tempted with the distractions of good things. We cal allow ourselves to get side-tracked, so that before we know it, we have forgotten our goal and wasted our strength. The Gospels are full of examples of this.

What does all of this mean for us? Lent is a time for reflection....it is a time to enter the 40 day season of Lent by going into the desert. There may not be a desert out here in Western Massachusetts. We may not be able to go out into the desert....but we can allow the Spirit to guide us into the desert of reflection of our life. Whether we are married, single or widowed...our life has meaning and purpose or we would not be here. Lent can put us in touch with that meaning by putting us in closer touch with God.

But we may be tempted during this Lent not to make that journey. This is our time of testing. We may be tempted not to journey through the desert for very good reasons. Our job keeps us busy...our family needs our attention...the weather is too cold.

Let us not succumb to the temptation of bypassing Lent. Let us use this time of Lent as a personal desert experience. Let us pray today that god will help us overcome these temptations....that keep us from experiencing Lent....as a time of renewal.

FROM THE BISHOP

My dear friends in Christ:

There is no adequate way to say thank you for the tremendous generosity shown by the people of the Diocese of Springfield in the special collection taken up for the Tsunami victims. So far, $303,703.95 has been raised from individuals, parishes and institutions of the diocese.

The generosity is overwhelming, far outstripping any previous special collection. Already all the monies collected have been sent to Catholic ReliefServices for their efforts on the ground in the nations so badly affected by the disaster.

Because Catholic Relief Services has, for many years, had representatives in the nations most severely damaged, the CRS workers are able to provide help on a daily basis. That is what they are doing with the funds you so generously gave helping those whose homes, whose livelihoods, whose very communities were so badly damaged or destroyed by the tsunami.

God bless and reward the outpouring of generosity you manifested. God continue to bless you for all the good you continue to do.

With deepest appreciation,

Most Reverend Timothy A. McDonnell

Bishop of Springfield

Special Note: We thank all those who have contributed to the relief effort at Holy Name Parish. $6882.00 was collected during the special collection, in addition to those parishioners who mailed contributions directly to Catholic Relief. Holy Name School will be participating in the Catholic Relief Rice Bowl collections during Lent and sending that for the relief effort. In addition, Holy Name Parish will be host to a special fund raising concert for the victims of the Tsunami tragedy. See the bulletin for more information on this. Thank you for all you support and assistance.

Fr. John
