Down in Westbury, NY out on Long Island there is a parish just off of the Meadowbrook Parkway called St. Brigids. St. Brigids parish was the focus of a book written in 1997. The name of the book is not hard to remember---it was simply entitled, Parish!
St. Brigids is a large and yet very ordinary parish. But like many parish communities, it is trying to do some extraordinary things.
The book, Parish! tells of their successes and failures and shows both the frustrations and joys of many of the parishioners, lay leaders, and the pastor. What the author tries to do is to capture the very essence of parish life at St. Brigids. As I mentioned, this is a real parish in a real community. It is by no means a perfect parish.but then no parish is perfect.
In many ways the make up of St. Brigids is much like Holy Name. It is a large parish that was split up into other parishes like we were many years ago. It has a school and a Sunday evening 5:30pm Mass like we do. It is a very diverse community in ethnicity and in spirituality like we are.
The people of St. Brigids are ordinary parishioners trying to live out their lives as faithful Christians. They are not always successful. They even may get on each others nerves at times. But they are compassionate people. They are working hard for their parish. They reach out to those who are disadvantaged. They make room for prayer in their lives.
The pastor in the book tries to balance being a spiritual leader with being an administrator, as he tries to get past those killer bs---known as bingo, budgets, and boilers. But the pastor and the parishioners try to stay focused on the mission statement of their parish.
It is an interesting book, as it deals with many of the issues dealt with by many large parishes such as ours. Many of the letters of St. Paul that we hear each week at Mass deal with issues in the parish communities of the early church.
The communities of the early church had to confront conflict, divisions, and hardships. But Paul also praised those communities that also reached out to the poor and took strong moral stands. The issues faced in Pauls communities are in many ways no different than the issues faced by St. Brigids in the book or even in our parishes here in Springfield.
Being a parish community in Westbury NY or Springfield, MA brings many of the same challenges.
But a strong parish stands together in unity while at the same time embracing debate as to how we should be church to one another. Let us remain focused on our parish mission, which is printed on the front of our bulletin.
As a parish community---and as Catholics---we may not always agree with each other. But we should embrace a unity of purpose, as we face challenges within our parish.
In opening our hearts to the gospel message of Christ, we let in the Holy Spirit. In doing so..the Holy Spirit will guide us in growing our parish and furthering the mission of Jesus Christ in the world.
