AND THE WORD IS.

St. Bonaventure

 by Fr. John Connors

If someone asked you, who is the greatest theologian among the Franciscans in history would you say: (a) St. Francis of Assisi, the founder of the Franciscans, (b) St. Bonaventure whose feast is celebrated on July 15th or(c) St. Anthony of Padua.Well, if you answered (b)St. Bonaventureyou would be right.

St. Bonaventure was the Franciscans greatest theologian and has often been called the second founder of the Franciscan order. He was a very close friend of St. Thomas Aquinas who obviously lived at the same time as Bonaventure.St. Bonaventure did much to bridge the chasm that had developed between the first generation of Franciscans and the second generation of Franciscans.

St. Bonaventure is a Doctor of the Church which means he was a great teacher and theologian. But this highly intellectual saint was also very down to earth. The story goes that when Pope Clement IV nominated Bonaventure to be Archbishop of York he convinced the Pope to accept his refusal.A few years later, another Pope, Gregory X, created him Cardinal-Bishop of Albano and the pope mandated Bonaventure could not refuse.

The pope ordered Bonaventure to Rome and sent emissaries to meet him with the red hat and the orders. It is said that the emissaries from the Pope found him in a monastery washing dishes.Bonaventure, rather than accept the appointment right there, told them to hang the cardinals hat on a tree limb because he could not take it in his greasy hands.(He did eventually go to Rome to accept his appointment.)

Bonaventure was a great spiritual writer. In this year of 2007 we could not celebrate his feast day on July 15th because the 15th fell on a Sunday and Sunday liturgies usually take precedence over a saints feast days. But even though we are unable to celebrate his feast day at Mass this year, let us still be inspired by his writing. Here is a quote from his famous work, Journey to the Mind of God which is in the Office of Readings for July 15th in the Liturgy of the Hours:

If you ask how mystical experiences with God can occur, look to the grace of God---not to doctrine; look to the thrust of the heart---not the intellect;look to prayer---not to research---seek the love of God----and not the teacher----look not to the light of the intellect---but to the burning fire that carries the soul to God.

St. Bonaventure died in 1274 with the pope at his deathbed.

Charismatic Mass of Healing and Evangelization:Please note that there will not be a Mass of Healing and Evangelization during the Month of August. The Mass will return on Sunday, September 2nd at 2:00.Thank you!

On Tuesday, July 24th, the Basilica of St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr will host an evening of prayer and healing with Fr. Richard McAlear, OMI.The Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy will begin at 6:30 pm, followed by Mass and anointing. The sacrament of Reconciliation will also be available. For more information call the office at 594-6669 or Albina Roy at 532-4075. The Basilica is located at 566 Front Street in Chicopee.
