This grant is made possible through the generous donations of our parishioners to the FUTURE OF HOPE campaign conducted by the Diocese in 1999 and 2000.The original goal of the campaign was $30,000,000 and to date parishioners across the Diocese have contributed $38,000,000.Grants have been given in excess of $2,700,000 to the beneficiaries of the five endowments established by the campaign and over $15,000,000 has been rebated to the parishes throughout Western Massachusetts.

AND THE WORD IS.

SHAWN

by Fr. John Connors

His parish is the Deaf Catholic Community of Wrentham, Massachusetts. He attended college at Providence College and he graduated from Cathedral High School right here in Springfield. His interests include cycling, jogging, skiing, snowboarding and travel.

His name..is Shawn Carey.Shawn was born profoundly deaf but that has not stopped him from achieving his goals.Shawn has succeeded throughout life and has been particularly active in working with and encouraging others who have hearing challenges.

Shawn is the grandson of one of our Holy Name parishioners, Kathleen Landry, who, I might add, is very proud of her grandson. But beyond his experiences and accomplishments of the past, Shawn is now pursing studies for the priesthood.Shawn is anticipating being ordained to the priesthood in 2009.

Shawn is studying for priesthood at St. Patrick Seminary in Menlo Park, California. He is looking forward to being ordained for the Archdiocese of Boston. In his calling to priesthood, Shawn envisions being one who helps to build a bridge between the deaf and hearing Catholics, in one big family as the Body of Christ.

Already Shawn has led bible studies, worked with the deaf in religious education, and functions as a Eucharistic Minister.

In a recent interview with the Boston Archdiocesan newspaper, The Pilot, Shawn said, My deafness is not a disability.I show people that anyone, regardless of their disability, has the capability to go beyond the limits.

In the article Shawn said his favorite scripture passage is Luke 24:13-35 The Road to Emmaus. He says, In todays world we are often consumed with our busy lives, in which we tend to forget to recognize Jesus who has been with us at all times in both happiness and sadness.Whenever I realize that I have been consumed with my work and my busy life, I then remind myself that Jesus is always on my side. This is a wakeup call for of us busy people!

As Shawn now approaches this fall and begins his final two years of his formation for priesthood, let us keep him in our prayers.I know his grandmother Kathleen will do so.
