AND THE WORD IS.....
Freedom
 By Fr. John Connors
Monday June 6th is the anniversary of
D-Day, the day on which Allied Forces stormed the beaches of Normandy to begin
the liberation of Europe in the quest for freedom. We also celebrated Memorial
Day last week and Flag Day is coming up on June 14th. It is a time
to give thanks to God for our freedom as a nation. And, it is a time to
remember those who have sacrificed to preserve our liberty. My father along
with the loved ones of millions of families served in the Allied effort in
Europe.
On June 6, 2024 more than 12,000 Allied aircraft and
about 5,000 naval vessels began the massive invasion of France. They had waited
for a break in the weather and it finally came. In the first wave of the
landing at Omaha beach one unit suffered 91 percent casualties. As General Omar
Bradley would later write, Six hours after the landing, we held only 10 yards
of beach.
When news of D-Day went out into the world, the world
understood the immensity of the moment. The New York Daily News pulled its lead
stories to print the Lords Prayer on its front page. Broadcasting from Paris,
Nazi authorities told citizens that anyone cooperating with the Allies would be
shot. And across France, the resistance defied those warnings.
One such person who bravely defied those warnings and
stood up for freedom is Paul Giguerre. You may remember reading about him
recently in the republican. Paul is a member of Holy Name Parish and still
attends Mass often. He is now 81, but back on D-Day he was just 19 years old
and was behind enemy lines before the D-day invasion began. Although American,
he was part of the French Resistance and worked to gain intelligence information.
Once he was caught by the Gestapo and had both hands
broken during interrogation. I can still see parts of his hands swollen after
Mass some days. Paul later escaped and returned back to the Resistance. There
would be many other covert assignments he would receive in the overall effort
to bring freedom to the world.
When the D-Day invasion was over and the guns fell
silent the coastline along France was strewn with many of the personal
belongings of those who gave their lives. Wallets, photos, helmets, canteens,
and diaries were just some of the items. But there were also small bibles mixed
in with the wreckage of war. Many of the soldiers had carried those bibles in
their gear. And it is in the bible that we hear the verse: no greater love
that this that a man lay down his life for another. May God bless those who
have served our country and preserved our freedom.
Annual Catholic Appeal
One
Church, One Body....Serving One Another
New Spirit, Inc.
Just one of the many ministries funded
through your donation to the Annual Catholic Appeal
Just this past
month the Springfield Republican ran a very important story about services to
our youth and showcased in that article the President of New Spirit, Inc. on of
the vital ministries that are supported by the Annual Catholic Appeal....
New Spirit is a non-profit youth ministry organization committed
to proclaiming the good news of Gods Real Presence in the world and his
Unconditional Love for each of us. Their goal is to create an environment which
accepts and celebrates all young people, enabling them to enjoy a positive
faith experience, and inviting then to be in a personal relationship with Jesus
Christ.
Our congratulations to Pat Sears (and of course, Barry
Kingston) for the wonderful work they achieve among the youth of Western
Massachusetts. Pat and Barry are founders and facilitators of New Spirit, Inc.
This non-profit ministry based in Springfield is but one that serves the youth
of the four counties of our diocese and Western Massachusetts.
For those who have had the fortune of hearing this duo
do just what their mission statement states, you know full well the talent and
commitment that passionately guides them in their ministry.
We truly are extremely fortunate to have in our midst
these two gentlemen. By donating to the Annual
Catholic Appeal this year you will not only be making a gift to our youth,
families, elderly, those in need, and diocesan administrative services but you
will be making a commitment to the vital services that serve countless
individuals throughout our four counties.
