Fourth Sunday of Lent:Nicodemus and Jesus

In todays Gospel, the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus reminds us during this Lent, that as we seek to put our spiritual lives in order, we cannot accomplish this task on our own.God has done for us what we cannot do for ourselves. We are reminded that we have been made able to see the kingdom of God - we have been given the gift of eternal life through the waters of baptism.

As we continue our Operation Rice Bowl journey, let us remember in prayer that we are called to be good stewards of what has been entrusted to us.Through protecting the environment in which we live, we respect the goodness of nature, a gift God has given.May our fasting keep us mindful of those who have no clean water to grow crops or to nourish their families.May our almsgiving assist Catholic Relief Services as we learn about water and sanitation programs in Afghanistan.

Stations of the Cross are held on Friday evenings during Lent at 7:00 in the Church.

The Children of Holy Name School present the Stations of the Cross: Friday afternoons at 1:15.All are welcome.

Mark your calendars .....

AND THE WORD IS.

TRUTH

By Fr. John Connors

A few years ago there was a story in the paper about a cleaning woman in Syracuse, New York who was sweeping the floor one night when she found $40,000.After recovering from her initial shock, she decided to put the money in a paper bag and take it home with her.

The following morning she immediately called the bank and requested that someone come and get the money. She said, I couldnt sleep all night. After thinking about it, I was sure glad to get rid of that money.Although she said she had considered keeping the money, as it was reported, she decided not to.

Now we dont know for sure whether the woman was really going to keep the money. But we do know that acts of dishonesty, like other immoral acts, have a way of haunting us.

Jesus tells us in scripture, everyone who lives in sin is the slave of sin.And what is it that sets us free from this bondage?Well, as the cleaning woman discovered, it is the truth that sets us free.

But sometimes we are easily deceived. An illusion of false freedom comes from breaking out of the bounds imposed on us by moral law.But what seemingly appears to be freedom. is actually more confining and enslaving. We then begin to feel anxious and upset over what we have done.It is what happens when we place ourselves at the center of our lives .. instead of reserving that place for God.

As we move to the middle of this Lenten season, let us reorient ourselves by placing God at the center of our lives. It will not only make our Lenten season more enrichingit will bring peace to our lives.

Just like the cleaning woman called the bank and asked them to come and take away the stolen money.let us use this Lenten season to ask God to take away our guilt or our anxieties. Then we will discover.that the truth will set us free.
