 Question Box ?
What is the basic difference
between the Catholic Bible and the Protestant Bible?
Both the Catholic Bible and
the Protestant Bible have the same number of books (27) in the New Testament
and they are in the same order. The
difference between the two bibles is in translation and in the Old
Testament. In the Catholic bible, the
Old Testament has 46 books and in the Protestant bible there are 39 books.
The seven books contained in
the Old Testament in the Catholic bible that are not in the Protestant bible
are: Tobit, Judith, 1st and 2nd Maccabees, Wisdom (of
Solomon), Sirach (Ecclesiasticus) and Baruch.
Certain parts of Esther and Daniel are also deleted in the Protestant
Old Testament although most of those two books are included.
The New Testament of the
bible was born out of Tradition within the Church beginning with the earliest
writings of Paul. During the
Reformation of the 16th century, many Protestants rejected the seven
Old Testament books noted above primarily because they are believed to have
been written in Greek rather than Hebrew.
Today, many Protestant bibles
include the seven books written in Greek in the Old Testament as a separate
section usually entitled, Apocrypha.
Although Protestants do not consider them canonical, inserting them as a
special addendum fosters greater unity among us, particularly as it relates to
devotional reading of scripture.
Our Catholic faith teaches us
that the books of scripture---all 73 of themteaches solidly, faithfully, and
without error that truth which God wanted put into the sacred writings for the
sake of our salvation (Constitution on Divine Revelation, paragraph 11).
In other words, we understand
the bible to be the inspired word of God that is designed to lead us to
salvation. For a very good overview of
the Catholic view of scripture take about 15-20 minutes and read Dei
Verbum---The Constitution on Divine Revelation. It can be found in the beginning of any Catholic bible or go to
the following web site for a copy:
