by Fr. John Connors
I was watching ESPN the other evening and a story was told about Don Shula. Don Shula is a Hall of Fame NFL coach and was the longtime coach of the Miami Dolphins.
One summer he was vacationing in Maine. It was a rainy afternoon so he, his wife, and his five small children went to the towns only theatre. When they walked into the theatre, only six other people were there. To a person, however, they stood up and applauded the Shula family.
As the Shulas sat down a man came running up and shook the coachs hand. How did you recognize me? Shula asked him. The man replied, Mister, I dont know who you are. All I know is that the manager announced before you came in with your family that unless five more people showed up he was closing down and there would be no movie today.
We get lessons in humility often in our life. It has been said that one of the hardest secrets for a person to keep is his opinion of himself or herself. It is when we forget ourselves that we do things that are most likely to be remembered.
Christian Herter was running hard for re-election in the 1950s for governor of Massachusetts, and one day he arrived at a barbecue. Hed had no breakfast or lunch so he was very hungry. As he moved down the serving line he held out his plate and received one piece of chicken. The Governor said to the serving lady, Excuse me. Do you mind if I get another piece of chicken? I am very hungry.
The woman replied, Sorry, I am supposed to give one piece to each person. He repeated, But I am starved. Again, she said, only one to a customer. The Governor was normally a modest man but he decided this was the time to use the weight of his office. So he said, Madam, Do you know who I am? I am the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. And the woman answered, Do you know who I am? I am the lady in charge of the chicken. So move along, mister.
A key theme in our readings this week is humility. Humility in our culture today is not something that is treasured. Societies driven by status seldom advocate humbling ourselves. Jesus reverses what we learn on TV and in our culture. He teaches us to reverse our thinking and forget about being admiredand serve people in need. He taught it was the only way to fulfillment.
It has been said that the person who looks up to God seldom looks down on people. Let us open our hearts to God to grow in humility and in our service to one another.
My dear friends in Christ,
The news from Peru about the aftermath of the terrible earthquake that struck that country indicates the need for prayer for all those who have been killed, those who have been left homeless and those suffering the aftereffects.
In addition to prayer, financial help is needed. Catholic Relief Services in the United States is working with the Peruvian Bishops to provide assistance to the people who have suffered such great losses. If you would like to assist, I ask that you make your gift to Peruvian Relief and put it in your parishs collection basket. Please make checks payable to the Diocese of Springfield and note it for CRS/Peruvian Relief. Monies collected will be forwarded by the diocese in their totality through Catholic Relief Services to Peru for relief efforts.
My thanks to you for all you do to help our brothers and sisters in need. Please, in a special way, keep the people of Peru in your prayers and all those who have suffered such tragedies this past summer the coal miners, people killed in the bridge collapse and so many other tragedies that seem to have cast a pall over the summer months.
Know that you are always in my prayers.
With every best wish,
 In Christ,
 (signed)
