Curriculum
The goal of the Pre-K program is to foster social, emotional, cognitive and physical development in young children. Children are natural learners and the best way to teach children is to build on their natural learning styles. Children learn through play and play fosters total development and should be integrated into everything children do. The classroom is set up to encourage this kind of learning. The classroom learning centers allow the children to develop social and communication skills, play cooperatively and learn to share materials. They work independently or in small groups. Learning centers foster creativity, curiosity and hands-on learning as well as encouraging the children to solve problems. Learning Centers at this grade level include:
  • Religion: The religion program/center emphasizes that Jesus loves and cares for everyone.
  • Language Arts: The language arts center develops oral language and vocabulary, listening skills, letter recognition, writing skills, and a positive attitude about reading.
  • Science: Children acquire a basic understanding about nature and develop sensory skills.
  • Music: At this center, children are encouraged to improve their auditory discrimination, auditory memory, and verbal expression.
  • Art: Activities for the art center enhance creative expression, social skills, oral language, small motor skills, imagination, and concepts about size, shape, texture, and color.
  • Block Area: Children develop concepts of number, size, shape, space, and weight. Through the use of manipulatives and conversation, they build on language and social skills.
  • Dramatic Play (house corner): This center encourages imagination and strengthens social and language skills.
  • Small Motor: The activities at this center are designed to develop eye-hand coordination, increase attention span, improve social skills, and build concepts about size, shape, color, and pattern.
  • Large Motor: This program develops coordination, strength, large muscles, physical fitness, and social skills.
  • Library and Physical Education are included in weekly activities
  • All Pre-K students participate in our technology center and utilize learning games to foster early childhood development.
